Satellite TV Set to Usher in a New Future

Do you remember the future predictions of yesteryear?  The predictions that stated everyone would be driving flying cars by the year 2000, or the ones that said everyone would have a personal robot to do the housework?  Well, at least one of those predictions is set to come true in a very short time.  The prediction of an automated home, with interconnected appliances and a TV/computer system within the same unit will soon be a reality and satellite TV providers will be the architects of that future.  How are satellite TV providers working to build the future home?  What steps are being taken to make this dream a reality?

Connectivity – Currently, technology is being developed that will connect your PC or laptop, your TV and your satellite connection.  This will enable you to watch or record TV programming on your hard drive, while being able to watch or record content on your TV, as well.  However, the technology doesn’t stop there!  In the not-so-distant future, there will be no difference between your TV and your computer; they will be the same thing.  Remember those futuristic images of a TV wall that doubled as a computer screen?  Well, they are about to become reality. Ongoing research and development has lead to new technologies being created that will allow hybrid TV/computer solutions to become a reality on more than just a small scale.

Your Appliances – While the connection of the TV and the computer may sound logical and exciting, what about connecting your appliances to the same home network?  Sound futuristic and strange?  Well, it could soon be the norm for new homes.  Smart appliances are now able to make use of a home network connection (such as the satellite network between your computer and TV) to send out repair calls, order replacement parts and even track your groceries left in the fridge.  Imagine never being caught unawares when you ran out of milk or eggs again!  Imagine your refrigerator or stove diagnosing a problem on its own and summoning a repairperson or ordering a replacement part on its own!  Well, thanks to today’s satellite TV providers, that could soon be a reality.

Internet – Of course, all of this technology will rely on an Internet network connection.  Satellite TV providers already offer Internet connections and they are rapidly growing in popularity, as well as transfer speeds. In short, your satellite connection will no longer be for TV viewing enjoyment, alone.  You will surf the web through your satellite connection, run your home over the connection and even ensure that regular maintenance on appliances is carried out, via this connection.  The satellite TV providers of today are set to become much more, in the very near future.

As you can see, satellite TV has an enormous future, ripe with possibilities.  If the current research and development is correct, then that future may come sooner than anyone expects. In fact, you are already able to connect your PC or laptop to your TV and your satellite connection.  The rest will fall into line shortly.

I love planetariums. The stars, planets, satellites, etc. plus the padded reclining seats, dark comfortable surroundings, and usually a nice soothing voice. Yes, it’s great. In no time at all, I’m fast asleep! Only once, many years ago, I stayed wide awake for the whole program.

The story was so intriguing I couldn’t take my usual nap! Even more remarkable, I can still recall most of the storyline and many of its details, although the author, title, and producer have long since slipped my memory. If you like I will fill you in on what I remember. Perhaps you saw the show too.

The entire program was a series of brief conversations, snippets of dialogue, between two and occasionally three characters — different characters each time.

The first scene seemed rather conventional, normal people talking about normal things: computers, space travel, the meaning of life — things of that sort.

Shortly, we leave their chitchat and eavesdrop on a second couple. We find that many years had passed, and here the talk isn’t quite so mundane. One says to the other: “Well, one hundred and fifty isn’t an uncommonly old age nowadays.”

The second speaker exclaims: “You know, body replacement parts are getting so popular now, I hear they are experimenting in Russia with replacing whole bodies. The mind can live on for who knows how long. Immortality might be within our grasp someday.”

Then we pan ahead to a group of travelers on holiday. Before long we find out they are living on another planet, and they are discussing how quick and easy space travel had become. The travelers speak of humans populating other solar systems, and they have realistic hopes of exploring other galaxies.

An indefinite amount of time passes, and we move on to another dialogue. A mother is telling her daughter of the inferior computers they had when she was a little girl and how much technology has improved over her lifetime.

“Now,” she said, “cybernetic links can transmit signals from planet to planet in ultra light seconds. Why, we can get a complete biographical history on a potential employee from the Orion constellation within minutes. There is even talk of consolidating all of our knowledge on art and science from our three galaxies into one giant computer complex and placing it on a single planet. Isn’t that exciting?”

The little girl giggles with delight.

Time goes by. We find ourselves listening to another conversation. A man of 300 plus years is speaking to another of similar age. “Do you realize,” he said, “despite all of our advances in curing diseases, rejuvenating human bodies, ending hunger and poverty, and settling in who knows how many galaxies, we are still a backward species in a number of respects?”

“What do you mean?” inquired the other gentleman.

“We still don’t have a clue as to the meaning of life. Why we are here? What is our purpose?”

“Perhaps the computer could solve that problem.”

“Oh, I’ve asked the computer those very questions almost daily over the last fifty or sixty years.”

“Have you now? Well, what does it say?”

“Insufficient data. Still processing.”

“Ah, that’s that then. Once the computer starts working on a problem, it won’t quit until it comes up with the answer.”

Then we drift on to another pair of talking heads somewhere far beyond in time and space. From their conversation we learn that the computer now operates in hyperspace. It is no longer confined to a planet, a solar system, or even a galaxy. People communicate directly with it throughout the known universe.

The same type of questions are directed to the computer.

Bioinformatics is emerging science which incorporates information technology applied in biological research to store, collect and retrieve biologically oriented data, to analyze and predict the composition of molecules (nucleic acids, proteins, etc ) and to model biological systems through mathematical, statistical and computer methods. It brings together the fields of Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bio Technology and Genetics under the fold of computers and software advances. Thanks to James Watson – Crick in basic understanding of the Bacterial DNA (genome), which lead to the basis of coding Chromosomes through the Super Computers. The Bioinformatics is changing the entire concept on gene. In future we may be compelled to view life and disease through the Chemistry of Genes.
1. Computer Speaks on Bio information: With feeding of complicated information to a computer it analyses the facts, it even speaks that life is a pack of information with a clear message that book of the life written in the complex DNA consisting of four letters. A.T.G. C. In future science expects that Physician can solve many mysteries of disease just looking into a computer and the greatest advantage lies in detection of most of the Genetic disorders. In future many diagnostic tests may be done by Bio informed computers, the chip locating abnormal base pairs at different gene locations.

2. Bioinformatics and Proteomics: The knowledge of information about the Genes and Science of Genomics lead to science of proteomics which analyses every protein in human functional dynamics. The science of proteomics will revolutionise the understanding of Hormones, Immunoglobulins targeting infections and Enzymes that build or break energy reserves. We are aware now, that there are too, many proteins which guide our life (50,000 to about 2 millions). But few Proteins play the real orchestra, modifying different actions in day to day life. Already many Bio Technology firms have started proteomics programme, if the events succeed to desired expectations there will be better quality of life serving to minute details.
3. Bioinformatics in Gene Therapy: Gene therapy suffered with many problems in the past will have a greater revival with better understanding of human genome. Many Gene therapy trails will become virtual realities.

4. Drugs for Future: At present we use several drugs with a broad understanding to target only 500 proteins in the body, out of the 30,000 proteins already known, with advances in Genomic Medicine there will be more rational approach in drug discovery and clinical application. In future it is possible to target the diseases like Diabetes and Cancer before the onset of physical disease (phenotypic expression). The scientific visions include interfering with the sick cell, sparing the healthy cells, making the therapy least toxic and harmful. The discovery in this direction lead to discovery of Monoclonal antibodies, choosing the particular receptor on the cancer cell responsible for propagation of disease. With better understanding on Bioinformatics Anti Cancer Drug discoveries will be target oriented with least toxic effects on normal cells. The following diseases are being targeted by many drug firms with Bioinformatics include: AIDS, Mental Illnesses, Auto Immune Disease, Obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, Heart Disease and Parkinson’s disease.
